Sarah Palin is an intruging choice for the VP ticket of the Republican party. A John McCain/Sarah Palin ticket, in my opinion, is a mirror of the Obama/Biden ticket. Obama chose a man who had a lot of experience and who could lend a sense of realism to a campaign that has been something like an American political fairy tale. Biden brings with him a long established voting record that will appeal to democrats and his name on the ticket allows Obama to deflect some of the comments about his lack of experience.
McCain’s pick of Sarah Palin is no less significant. The choice was brilliant on a political level. The news reports during the Democratic National Convention have been sprinkled with stories about Hillary Clinton supporters who refuse to support Obama for his denying Hillary a seat at the table. Many of these voters are women. Governor Palin’s inclusion on the ticket will automatically make the ears of the Clinton supporters perk up.
Palin also brings something to the Republican ticket that has been lacking on both the Democratic and Republican tickets: executive experience. While she has not been governor of Alaska for long, she has been a mayor and has run a business. McCain is surely hoping that having a governor on his ticket will be a trump card that he can pull out through the remainder of the campaign.
Palin also brings with her a strong pro-life record. For many Christian voters this is one of the most important issues when choosing a candidate. She recently gave birth to a child who had been diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome before being born. Gov. Palin could have chosen the path that many parents have chosen (as seen by the decreasing numbers of babies born with this ailment) and aborted the pregnancy. Well, she did not. You can read more about the story in a previous post that I made.
It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out as Gov. Palin comes under the hot lights of the national media and the Obama campaign adjusts fire to take on this new challenge.
As I was sitting here typing this, Fox News just showed a video of Gov. Palin firing an M4 Carbine with some soldiers. That makes the soldier in me smile. On a side note, it will be interesting to see how she works with the military and veterans.
